Transit damage visibility

Shipping Impact Indicators

A shipping impact indicator makes qualifying impacts visible on the package. iNTACT’s Standard Indicator keeps a triggered red signal visible so receiving teams know when to inspect.

01 / The indicator

What Is a Shipping Impact Indicator?

A shipping impact indicator is a label applied to the outside of a package. It is set to a chosen impact threshold and provides a visible signal if that threshold is crossed during transit.

The iNTACT Standard Indicator is passive and battery-free. When a qualifying impact occurs, its indicator window turns red and stays red. It cannot be reset, so the signal remains visible when the shipment is inspected.

It is an impact indicator for shipments, not a location tracker: the Standard indicator signals that its threshold was exceeded, but does not record where or when the impact happened.

02 / The signal

How Impact Indicators Detect Transit Damage

A shock indicator for packages responds to a mechanical event rather than a GPS position or a scan. If the impact reaches the configured threshold, the indicator changes state and displays a red window.

The signal flags a shipment for inspection. It does not diagnose the contents or identify the exact point in the route where the impact occurred.

That makes a transit damage indicator useful alongside the receiving team’s usual package checks: the signal draws attention to an impact-threshold event, and the shipment can then be inspected.

03 / The process

How iNTACT Works

Set the trigger level to match what you ship, then follow the same simple sequence: apply, move, inspect.

  1. 01

    Apply

Attach the passive indicator to the outside of the package before it leaves.

  2. 02

    In transit

The mechanical indicator travels with the shipment without batteries or electronics.

  3. 03

    Inspect

If its configured threshold is crossed, the red signal stays visible so the shipment can be inspected on arrival.

04 / A clearer handoff

Why Use an Impact Indicator?

A carton can look intact even when its contents have experienced an impact. A visible indicator adds a simple check at the handoff: the receiving team can see whether the configured threshold has been crossed and decide whether the shipment needs closer inspection.

The red signal is evidence that the threshold was crossed, not proof of damage or its exact cause. It gives teams a concrete prompt to inspect the shipment and discuss what happened.

iNTACT Indicator Types

The Standard visual indicator is the current core option. The website also describes barcode, QR and RFID versions as coming soon.

Standard

Visual impact indicator

A passive, battery-free label with a configurable threshold. Once triggered, its window turns red and cannot be reset.

Coming soon

Barcode indicator

The described version makes the barcode unreadable on impact, for use with existing barcode scanners.

Coming soon

QR indicator

The described version combines an impact signal with QR scanning for image proof and location records.

Coming soon

RFID indicator

The described version disables its tag on impact, so status can flow through existing RFID reads.

07 / Choosing a signal

Impact Indicators vs Traditional Damage Detection

An impact indicator adds a threshold signal to the inspection process; it does not replace inspection.

Traditional visual check

What is visible at inspection

A person checks the package or goods and records what can be seen at that time. Damage inside a carton may not be obvious from its exterior.

Impact indicator

A persistent threshold signal

The indicator shows whether a configured impact threshold was crossed. The package still needs inspection to assess its contents and condition.

The Standard indicator does not record the impact’s timestamp or route location.

Shipping Impact Indicator FAQs

Learn more about iNTACT, read the shipping and impact glossary, or contact the team to discuss indicator options.

What is a shipping impact indicator?

It is a label applied to a package that gives a visible signal if an impact crosses its configured threshold during transit.

How does the iNTACT Standard Indicator work?

It is a passive mechanical indicator. If an impact crosses its configured threshold, the indicator window turns red and stays red.

What happens when an iNTACT indicator is triggered?

The Standard Indicator’s red state is irreversible and cannot be reset. Inspect the shipment when it arrives; the signal does not by itself diagnose the contents.

Does the iNTACT Standard Indicator need a battery?

No. It is a passive mechanical indicator and does not use batteries or electronics.

Does the Standard indicator identify where the impact happened?

No. It signals that its threshold was crossed, but does not record the time or location of the impact.

Where can shipping impact indicators be used?

iNTACT represents its indicators for warehousing and fulfillment, logistics and transportation, e-commerce, pharmaceuticals, electronics and other industries listed on this page.

How do I choose an impact threshold?

The trigger level can be configured to match what you ship. Contact iNTACT to discuss your shipment and packaging requirements.

Are barcode, QR and RFID indicators available now?

The iNTACT website currently marks the barcode, QR and RFID versions as coming soon. The Standard visual indicator is the core option shown on the site.

What should we do if the indicator turns red?

Inspect the shipment when it arrives. The signal highlights an impact event; it does not by itself diagnose the contents.
