iNTACT Shipping & Impact Indicator Glossary

Plain-language definitions for impact indicators, transit damage, thresholds and shipment accountability. The entries distinguish general logistics terminology from capabilities the iNTACT Standard Indicator actually provides.

Impact & Detection

Impact Indicator

An impact indicator is a device or label that visibly signals when an impact crosses a defined threshold, helping a receiver decide when to inspect a package. The iNTACT Standard Indicator is passive and mechanical: its window turns red when triggered and cannot be reset.

Shipping Impact Indicator

A shipping impact indicator travels on a parcel and makes a qualifying impact visible at handoff. It may also be called an impact indicator for shipments or a package impact indicator. iNTACT's Standard Indicator is applied to the package exterior; its signal flags an inspection rather than diagnosing the contents.

Impact Detection

Impact detection is recognizing that a shipment experienced an impact at or above a chosen trigger level. A threshold indicator can make that event visible, but the signal alone does not identify when or where it happened.

See how the indicator works

Impact Event

An impact event is a sudden force or jolt experienced by an object or package. During shipping, an event matters to an impact indicator when it crosses the configured threshold. The Standard iNTACT Indicator signals that the threshold was crossed, but does not log the event's time or location.

Visual Impact Detection

Visual impact detection means reading an impact event from a visible change on a package. With iNTACT's Standard Indicator, the window turns red after a qualifying impact and stays red for the receiver to see.

Damage Detection

Damage detection is identifying harm to packaging or contents. An impact indicator supports that decision by signaling a threshold-crossing impact; it does not prove contents are damaged or replace an inspection.

Shipping & Transit Damage

Transit Damage

Transit damage is physical harm that occurs while goods move through shipping or handling; shipping damage is a common related term. An indicator can show that its configured impact threshold was crossed and prompt inspection, but does not establish that damage occurred or who caused it.

Package Damage

Package damage is harm to the carton, container or protective packaging. The package and contents both need inspection: an indicator adds an impact signal to that context but does not determine the condition of either.

Shipment Monitoring

Shipment monitoring is observing information about goods while stored or in transit; transit monitoring is a similar broad phrase. The Standard iNTACT Indicator monitors one condition: whether its impact threshold was crossed. It is not a location tracker and does not record time or route.

Indicators & Thresholds

Damage Indicator

A damage indicator is a broad term for a label or device that signals a condition associated with possible damage. An impact indicator is one type: it signals an impact event that reaches its threshold, leaving the shipment to be inspected for actual damage.

Impact Detection Sticker

An impact detection sticker is a label attached to a package to show a visible response to a qualifying impact. Detection sticker and impact indicator label are related descriptions. The iNTACT Standard Indicator is attached to the shipment exterior and displays a persistent red state after activation.

Shock Indicator

A shock indicator is a general shipping term for a device or label that signals a sudden jolt or impact; it does not specify one universal measurement or design. iNTACT's Standard Indicator responds to its configured impact threshold and is not described as a vibration logger.

Impact Threshold

An impact threshold is the trigger level at which an indicator changes state; trigger threshold is another common wording. The iNTACT Standard Indicator's trigger can be configured to match the product and packaging requirements. The site does not publish one universal setting.

Irreversible Indicator

An irreversible indicator stays in its triggered state and cannot be reset to conceal its activation. After a qualifying impact, the Standard iNTACT Indicator remains red so the signal is visible when the package arrives.

Tamper-Evident vs Tamper-Proof Indicator

Tamper-evident packaging shows signs of access or interference; tamper-proof suggests that access is prevented. An impact indicator answers a different question: whether an impact crossed its threshold. iNTACT is not a security seal and does not prove a package was never opened.

Shipment Accountability & Evidence

Shipment Accountability

Shipment accountability means having useful information at handoffs to guide follow-up. A visible indicator state can give a receiver context for inspection, but it does not identify which person or carrier handled the package when an impact occurred.

Impact Evidence and Damage Evidence

A triggered indicator is visible evidence that its threshold was crossed. Damage evidence is the physical information gathered during inspection, such as the condition of packaging and contents. The indicator provides impact context; it does not by itself prove product damage or determine responsibility.

Chain of Custody

A chain of custody records who controlled or transferred an item and when. A Standard iNTACT Indicator does not create such a log; it gives a persistent visual state that can be considered alongside the shipment's existing records.

Audit Trail

An audit trail is a time-ordered record of actions or events. The Standard iNTACT Indicator does not generate a digital audit trail or timestamp; it keeps its red signal visible for people to inspect and document through their existing process.

Transit Damage Documentation

Transit damage documentation records what a receiver observes, such as indicator state, outer packaging and contents during inspection. A red iNTACT signal can prompt inspection, but the indicator does not store photographs, notes or a claim record.

Indicator Technologies

Barcode Impact Indicator

A barcode impact indicator describes an indicator concept paired with machine-readable barcode identification. iNTACT lists a Barcode option as Coming Soon. This is a future product direction, not a currently available Standard Indicator capability.

QR Impact Indicator

A QR impact indicator describes an indicator concept paired with a scannable QR code. iNTACT lists its QR option as Coming Soon; the site does not describe it as currently available.

RFID Impact Indicator

An RFID impact indicator describes an indicator concept paired with radio-frequency identification. iNTACT lists its RFID option as Coming Soon. The Standard visual indicator is the option currently described on the site.
